Independence is on the way to Norfolk, Va., for commencement of initial testing and evaluation of the aluminum vessel before sailing to its homeport in San Diego. Het kan verkeren. Van de nieuwe deels nog in aanbouw zijnde twee series (totaal 35 stuks) van Littoral Combat Ships (LCS klasse) voor de US Navy staan de eerste vier al op de nominatie om afgedankt te worden.
WASHINGTON: As part of its culling of ships in the 2021 budget submission, the Navy wants to scrap four Littoral Combat Ships which it says are already so outdated they can’t be even be used for training anymore, despite two of them being less than a decade old.
The requested retirement is another example of the litany of problems the LCS program has suffered during its short life: cost overruns, highly-anticipated ship modules that just don’t work, and propulsion issues that have made the program a poster child of a messy military procurement culture.

Los van de technische problemen die deze nieuwe specialistische klasse van schepen opleverden, waren en blijven ook de taakstellingen en wat er op en aan moet zitten onderwerp van discussie en kritiek. Net als de oplopende stuksprijs.
De snelle (circa 44 knopen) en manoeuvreerbare schepen ter grootte van WOII destroyers zijn voornamelijk bedoeld voor inzet in kustwateren. Gebouwd in twee klassen, de Freedom class (oorspronkelijk 16 stuks gepland) en de Independence class (19 stuks) oogt de laatste het meest futuristisch.
